The most important safety aspect is to replace the vacuum lines running from the brake booster to the intake manifold and to the engine head - I think where the distributor once was. CAUTION: old brake booster vacuum lines are dangerous. The line to the intake manifold broke at the vacuum line on my Gripen Interceptor and I lost my brakes. Fortunately, providence intervened (or one of my nine lives) and prevented a catastrophic accident. There was a recall on some 9-3's but never on the 9-5's since the incident rate is too low to hit the desk of a Boston lawyer (not surprising with Saab 9-5 sales volumes so low per year and with many now out of service). However, if you or someone else hits/jiggles the now brittle plastic lines like I did, you might get an awful surprise. The system is safe, but everyone with a 9-5 should ensure these lines are replaced before the hit 10 years - I would say every seven, in my opinion. Go with OE Saab, they might not be the only ones available but I wouldn't trust aftermarket for high criticality parts. Treat it like a self assessed recall. I sourced my lines from an old Saab dealer and I recall the one way valve was made in Germany. Eeuro has a fine selection in stock applicable to every vintage for the discriminating enthusiast :)
