As you can see in my signature, my first Saab was a 2000 9-3 hatchback that I have had now for 20 years. Several years ago, I bought a 2008 9-5 wagon off the classified ads here and that is still my daily driver. While they basically have the same engine and I enjoy both cars (why I still own them), the 9-5 is more of a "cruiser" similar to the 9000 due to the extra weight. I have not driven the new 9-3 Sportcombi, but expect you would notice a similar difference between a 9-5 wagon and the 9-3 Sportcombi. The 9-5 wagon, while still a nice drive will not be quite as nimble as the smaller 9-3 Sportcombi. I expect the difference would be similar between a C900 and the 9000. Both fun Saabs to drive, but different in character.
Any 9-5 up through the 2008 model will have an engine that is more familiar to you.
