Actually, I ran into a number of cars when I was looking used up here that had all the typical evidence of a sludging engines in the car repair history. What is worse, in Canada, very very few cars got the PCV upgrade kit installed, so much so that many had never even heard of it. I ended up going with a 2004 and 2005 as those years are better for that and keep much of the original feature set, though I do prefer the look of the first iteration.
saabsince93b is probably right if you had the car from new and ignored the dealer maintenance schedule, went above and beyond from day 1, *or* you bought one, dropped the pan, ensured everything was clean, damage fixed, and then did the low mileage full synth 0w40 changes thereafter. My experience is almost zero cars on the market were even close to that, though one might have more luck buying off the TSN classifieds in that regard. Many of these cars were leased, and the owners did not do anything much but drive the car and drop it at the dealership occasionally as per lease requirements.
That said, they are pretty good cars. Much more modern than the c900's, very safe, good utility. I still prefer driving the c900's, but the 9-5's are our work horses nowadays.
Don't let go of that SPG!!
