The balance chain is the one you can see by the oil pump. It's considerably smaller than the timing chain. When I had my oil pan off last weekend, I could see the balance shaft chain when looking up from below, but I couldn't see the timing chain. That one has a big guide at the bottom that keeps it somewhat hidden. If you cut it down by the sprocket at the bottom of the engine, I don't think you'd need to turn the engine to get it out. The only things it would be connected to at that point are the idler sprocket and the balance shaft sprockets, all of which should turn freely, or at the very least, wouldn't turn with the engine.
Just out of curiosity, what did you make your PVC pusher tool out of? I replaced all of my main bearings over the past couple of weeks, and it wasn't a fun job.
