2000 Aero project car, 135k mi. Knocking.
we tried to diagnose the source of the knock but due to an abundance of in-experience we misdiagnosed it. But we have learned a lot and that was really the goal here.
we have the car apart (again) and the pistons are out. They all look good EXCEPT for #4 (if you are keeping score, Jimmy and Dave both predicted this months ago)
Cylinders 1-3 look good, with cross hatching still visible. #4 piston is trashed, beat all to hell. the cylinder is gouged a bit. I can feel the roughness. Clearly the block needs to be machined, however I am not so sure I want to go down that path with this car.
So I'm wondering: if we replace the pistons with a good used set what is the prognosis? Will it be reasonably quiet and drive-able? or will be be a rattling knocking time bomb? Can we get some years out of this car?
Im aware that we have not taken the best path to get here, but here we are. I know this is not going to be a car that makes it to 250k and we are ok with that. Right now we have a car with pistons out and pan off. We can button it up and hope for the best .... or we can junk it.
