I have a 2001 Aero Wagon and can in _no way_ recommend this car for deep snow - it is simply too low. It gets around fine as long as the roads have been plowed, with dedicated narrow snow tires on all 4 wheels. But it EATS soft tires for lunch. I lost 1/8 inch of tread from my (very soft) front Nokians the first 2000 miles last winter - the rears look like new. If I rotate them religiously I expect them to be bald in 10,000 more miles. I do not drive particularly hard - the car just has tons of torque delivered to the front tires.
Here is my heresy - I expect some flak from the rest of the Forum on this: get an AWD car with good ground clearance - there is a good reason you see so many Subies in the Northeast. An allroad quattro would be a good high-performance alternative to an Aero if you like the Audi styling - it is about the same cost as an Aero, though you don't see the major end-of-season deals on new Audis as you do on Saabs. There should be some used ones coming off lease fairly soon. And it is rumored that Subaru may offer the 2.0 turbo engine in the Legacy GT in the USA soon - that would be a real hoot to drive.
Can you wait for the new AWD 9-3 in a year or so?
If you buy a used Aero, get a manual tranny. The new 5 speed auto on the 2002 is reportedly very good, and the older 4 speed auto not as good.
As an alternative - can you buy a beater Outback for bad days and save the Saab for better days? It is a shame to risk salt and physical damage to such a nice car. My Aero is normally garaged on nasty days, and I drive my Jeep. If I totalled the Jeep I would not weep very long. I would sure miss the Aero.
