John: I drove my manual trans 99 9-5 for four winters here in NH with four Gislaveds, and usually got a good laugh looking at all the Stupid Unsafe Vehicles off the side of the road in the winter. Will have four Nokian snows on my 02 Aero this winter, and hope I am not in the "new spoiler of the week" club too soon. The ground clearance does look a little low, but I'm pretty sure the car will do well.
Totally disagree with your comments about the older four speed auto trans being not as good as the manual. As nice as the new five speed auto is to me, the four speed was excellent and shifts fast(faster that a manual 9-5), and smooth( smoother than a manual 9-5). Upcoming Sentronic in the 03 will be even better. Manual shifting is going the way of the carbueretor. You can still get one if you really think it's a better way to mix gas and air, but the world is now fuel injected, and future development in manuals is a dead end. The real technology in this area is the electro-hydraulically shifted gearbox, and If I could get an M-3 with four doors, I'd be in one in a second. Saab will have it, as will many other high end and premium cars. I'm giving my right wrist and left foot a rest till I can get one from Saab. The auto is a far better match for the power and torque delivery of the turbo engine.
