This has been kicking around the Audi forums for at least 3 or 4 years because the original A4s had terrible range. Audi finally had to issue a TSB because of it. I also have luck with the gunslinger approach: hold the remote against your hips like John Wayne unloading a six-shooter.
I think common sense explains it pretty well: You're turning your body into an additional antenna. If as mentioned below the receiver is actually inside the car in the console, which is dumb to begin with, that explains the poopy range. Audi puts their antennas the long way in the bumpers. Mercedes uses an IR system which is also short-range and their receivers are built into either the mirrors or the door locks, so by careful aiming you can increase the range a bit.
