Window Rollers - what causes failure?

A few days ago I hear the "POP" when rolling down the window.
Today it popped again, and the window fell crooked in the door.
Window roller (green with metal clip) broken. Pretty sure i"ve done this job before, though don't remember what side.
What causes this failure? Does the scissor bind up and put too much pressure on the plastic?
Car is a 2001 Aero. Completely rust free and looks new inside and out (save for some paint chips).
Just wondering if there is anything I should do prior to putting the new one in this afternoon.
