The Cosco Opus 35 is a good infant car seat. It is adjustable and can accomodate your baby up to 35 lbs, which is more than most others. This means that you'll only need to buy 2 styles of seats: the rear facing infant seat, and then when they hit 20 lbs + 1 year you switch to a forward facing booster seat. (If I remember correctly.) The tradeoff is that this seat is slightly heavier than most other infant seats.
I've got the Eddie Bauer travel system from Babies R Us which includes the aforementioned car seat plus stroller. The car seat clips into a car seat base and also the stroller, which is very convenient. There are higher quality strollers available if you want to spend the cash, but I've been pretty happy with this setup. An added bonus if you have the tan interior in your car is that the beige car seat base matches nicely. :)
