Generally, you shouldn't use a convertible seat for a newborn. They're usually just too big and you can't get a nice snug fit. Also remember that the shoulder straps should be below their shoulders when they're rear-facing. Often times, with a convertible seat, the lowest position is still too high for a newborn.
Infant seat/carriers aren't really that expensive. They start about $50 and go up to the $100 range with LATCH now. It's just the Britax seats that are really really expensive ($200+). The two things that I wanted in a seat is a 5-point model and one that you pull/adjust the straps by pulling on a strap on the front (by their feet).
Oh, also the center is the safest place to be, as long as you can get a good installation there. Some car seat manufacturers say not to install in the center if there is a fold down arm rest (like in a 9-5).
