climate control defaults to off when car is started

HI
I picked up my 2002 9 5 Aero today, and am beginning to familiarize myself with all of its options. The manual indicated that when the car is started, the cliamte control is in auto, by default. I noticed that in my car, the climate control defaults to OFF when I start the car. I then push auto, and things are fine. (This also occurred in the Saab I test drove before purchasing the 9 5.)
Is there a way to have the cliamte control default to AUTO when the car is first started? The manual gives several examples of programming, but I was unable to find this option.
