Potenza S-03 owners, effect on fuel economy

I've had a set of S-03s on my 2.3 LPT wagon for about 1000 miles now. Like them a lot, don't imagine they'll live long since they appear to be so visibly soft :)
One thing I wasn't expecting was as big a hit on gas mileage as I seem to be having. I expected that a slight drop was a possibility (maybe a .5 mpg change), but I appear to have lost about 10% since I've switched over. My SID mileage (US gallons) appears to have dropped from an average of 20.5 to about 18.5.
Now, I've had some mechanical problems w/ my car, and am not sure if they've been adequately fixed (another story), and they may have been affecting the mileage as well (vacuum leak among other things), but I've reset the SID since the service was done, and still down in the 18s.
Driving in traffic (most, but not all of the time) on Southern California freeways. No change in driving habits, etc.
Anyone experience a similar drop in economy when switching to these or other sticky tires compared to the stock michelins?
