Carl,
My wife and I just purchased a 99 Wagon with 29,000 miles on it with 4cyl and auto and love it. We drove a 02 and yes there are some nice improvements to the car, most notbably the five speed auto and the 15 additional hp. If you search this board I am sure that you will be able to identify some of the first year glitches that occurred with the car...most notably the ECU (electronic control unit) that has been replaced in most of the 99's. From my understanding this was the source of a lot of electrical problems. I would suggest you bring it to an authorized Saab dealer to have them go through the car. They can pull up the history of any recall items by using the VIN number and identify any items that should be corrected but maynot have been.
I was leary of buying our first Saab used especially in it's first year of production, but I was able to find the previous owner and speak to them about the car, as they traded it in on a $70,000 BMW. Thus I had a very good idea of how the car was used and cared for. In the end having a good idea of the history and having the car checked out by a Saab mechanic lowered my concerns. I now feel that we have a pretty low mileage car, with most of the benefits of the new ones at 60% of the cost of the new.
I would suggest moving slowly and cautiously but it can be done....good luck.
