I looked at both cars. The VW with the 6 may have had a little more oomph than the Saab base wagon. The VW left us flat in terms of the interior and exterior. The dumkuf who designed the VW cup holder needs a new job. The Saab was a tad bigger, which did tip the scales.
The Subaru GT came in second to the Saab in our search for a wagon contest. We had 109k of trouble free service from our old Legacy. If the Subaru was bigger and if it had heated seats/mirrors we may have purchased it instead of the Saab. (The 2000 legacy is a tad smaller in back than the 1991 Legacy)
We have had our 9-5 wagon for about 11k miles and we love it. It fits our family well. The car is a dream on family trips with our kids. You can really pack it full of stuff and ride comfortably.
