The fact is,when it comes to downshifting, leaving the current 5 speed auto in sport mode will probably get you to the next lowest gear with less effort and time wasted reaching for the stick to put it in manual mode, and then pushing the button. Like you and others, I have tried the Audi, Chrysoer, and Lexus versions of these so called "manumatics", and after the novelty wears off,I just leave them in the auto mode, where they seem to work best.
The only real positive change in transmissions will come with the true sequential electro-hydraulic designs which combine manual transmission and clutch innards with either paddle shift convenience or fully automatic operation. That will make it worthwhile to have push button shifting,in my opinion.
