In particular, high pressure film strength. RedLine's web site compares their different grades' viscosity at both low and high shear rates with some other oils. Their 10W40 grades have the same high pressure film strength as most conventional 20W50 weight oils. I'd predict that many synthetic oils are similar in this regard. Red Line discourages the use of very wide range sythetic oils (0W40, 5W50). see http://www.redlineoil.com.
Up until now I have primarily used conventional oil, adhered to a 4000 mile/4 month change interval, and have had absolutely no lubrication related problems. That said, I am probably going to buy only full synthetic for the Aero Wagon (and accept whatever semi-synthetic oil Saab will give me).
