The pressure should be checked when the tires are cold. As to how much air pressure you should; as long as you don't go over the max pressure listed on the tires (53 psi on mine), you should not have any problems.
Advantages to low pressure: Smoother ride.
Advantages to higher pressure: Better gas mileage, tires last longer, better handling and braking, better resistance to hydroplaning, improved resistance to tire and especially rim damage from pot holes and such and the tires run cooler and are less likely to fail due to heat damage during high speed driving.
I run the pressure in the OEM Michelins on my 2000 Aero at 40 psi, for normal driving, with usually one passenger and rarely more than 2. I use at least the max. recommend in the owner's manual, 43 psi, for road trips.
