Well, yes and no. You won't damage the tires by taking them to their absolute max pressure, but you will likely wear out the center of the treads prematurely, and simultaneously will reduce the contact patch size, which _may_ affect handling and braking. Even a low-profile tire will tend to bow out in the center of the tread if you inflate it rock hard. The bigger the sidewall and the wider the tread, the more the tendancy to do this. If you look under an (unworn) wide truck tire that is severely overinflated, you can actually see daylight on the side of the tread where it should be touching the ground.
Personally, I have been happy with 36 psi in my 17 inch Aero tires, going up to 40 on long vacation trips.
Don't go to the max pressure listed on the sidewall, please!
