Uniqueness is priceless.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Reviving the 9-5 vs 5 series debate, bRAD, Tue, 17 Sep 2002 10:29:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Personally I find a 9-5 to be more desireable than a 5 series. I prefer front wheel drive. The current BMW 5-series just doesn't have the warmth and simplicity of a 9-5. The flat red lighting of the BMW guages is just one example why I prefer the 9-5. The torquey fell of the turbo is another.
If you exclude the 400hp M5, I fail to find any clear superiority in engineering, performance or quality with the Bimmer. It's just different high quality solutions to the same size class of problem.
I give the edge to Saab in intangibles, uniqueness, and price.
My friends E34 wagon is on it's second tranny at 120k and he thanks god he didn't get the goofy wagon sunroof. My old '83 528e continues into it's second hundred thousand miles at the hands of an old girlfriend needing nothing more than the routine $500 oil changes. Nothing really wrong with it, just another $500 every month or so for this and that.
BMW is a company that makes cars like the M5, M3, Z8 and Z3, races in F1 and makes fabulous motorcycles. I consider myself a BMW enthusiast too, what's not to like? Love Porsches and Ferrari's too.
But none of that makes a 9-5 inferior to a 5 series.
