THe "Platform" or "architecture" as GM prefers to call it, is a set of numbers locating important vehicle coordinates, along with the basic suspension design. About the only parts that are the same on a 9-5 and a Saturn are the floor pan and suspension arms. Even the suspension attachment points are different. Engine, interior, body stampings, front structure, frame materials (high strength vs. mild steel), can all be different. Then there's the bushings, springs, dampers, all the parts that give a car its unique "feel". GM got a black eye during the dark days of Roger Smith's regime for "badge engineering". That was long ago. Today, each division is back to making their own distinctive product, while using common platforms and components where it doesn't matter (except in reducing costs).
