Here's my plan:
I'm sticking with 17" more to defer spending rather than saving money. As it stands now I have three options;
1. Keep one set of wheels, buy 17" snow tires and keep having to pay someone to change the tires twice a year (once in the fall, once in the spring)
2. Keep the 17" wheels with the tires on them for the summer, and buy another set of wheels just for winter with snow tires (likely I'd get 16" if this is the direction I was taking- 16" tires are cheaper and with the smaller size there's more selection for snow tires)
3. Replace my summer tires on the 17" wheels with snow tires, then get another set of 17" wheels for my summer tires.
I'm going with option 3, this way I'll only have to pay for snow tires now, and wheels in the spring.
With option one- its really not economical because you have to pay someone to change your tires and re-balance them twice each year ($120 where I come from, $10 install, $5 balance/wheel)
and IMO this isn't the greatest thing for your tires either.
With option 2, this is a reasonable option, but if I'm going to pay for another set of wheels, I'd rather get a set which is better than the factory wheels for the summer, than a set for the winter. If you're satisfied with the wheels for the summer you could get a "beater" set of winter wheels for signifigantly less money than a nice set of summer wheels.
So Option 3 it is for me, you might choose otherwise.
For now, I'm keeping the Michelin Pilot Primacy's until they wear out and I'll be mounting them on OZ Superleggera's (17X8") in the spring.
Once the Michelins wear out, I'm going to try a set of Dunlop SP9000's
PS- Hirsch stuff, Did you happen to look at the price list?
Sure is nice stuff, but at those prices, unless you're rich, you'll have to think ahead.
