The A6 Avant was on my shopping list as well. I was also considering an Allroad. I ended up with an Aero wagon and won't look back.
I must say you were treated much better at the Audi dealership than I was- I guess I'm a bit younger than the average A6 buyer, but the guy wasn't really interested in selling me a car. His first question was "How much of a monthly payment are you considering?" I think this was his "diplomatic" way of saying "Perhaps we can show you a nice Golf"
When I told him what I wanted to spend, he gave me a half ass sales pitch which basically consisted of "its got all wheel drive and lots of cargo space" Thanks for the help buddy. "Sorry, nothing available for test drive today" Apparently every car in the dealership (quite a large dealership) was already sold.

A friend of mine was considering a BMW and inquired about lower interest rates that the competition (Saab and others) was offering. He was told that "we don't need incentives" He's driving a 9-3 now.

My opinion is that Saabs are heavily discounted because they don't spend enough money on advertising so they're not moving as many cars as they'd like. Fine with me, I'll take the relative exclusivety of a Saab and the lower price any day.

Obviously, everyone here's going to recommend the 9-5, but take your time, test drive both, and they buy a Saab for your own reasons.
