We've owned one rear wheel drive car, and it was one too many. Never again. We had studded snow tires on the back and it still wouldn't go in the snow. I suppose it depends on the car, but with front wheel drive you have the weight of the engine over the drive wheels, and that provides traction. I think pulling with front drive instead of pushing the car through snow also helps. (We learned this from experience with a very steep driveway). The old VW bugs were great in the snow because the engine weight was over the rear drive wheels. They also had big narrow tires that dug in. Maybe some of the more advanced TCS/ESP systems help this situation, and maybe the weight distribution is more even now. My Saabs have all done well in the snow without snow tires. I will, however, be buying snow tires for my Aero. I think it is more because the OEM tires are not designed for all season.
