P-R-N-D-M-L with S and W buttons still, and paddles... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: '03 automatic shift gate - same as '02?, Paul H, Thu, 10 Oct 2002 11:19:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
All '03 9-5's have the same transmission as '02 with the addition of shift paddles sorta' on the back side of the stereo controls. Pull the left one towards you to downshift and pull the right one towards you to upshift. Haven't tried pulling both at the same time. On the console instead of D-4-3-L is now D-M-L with the M in a circle with + & - on either side. In "M" the quadrant on the dash displays which gear you're in.
Fun to play with, but thank god they left the Sport setting or S button on the top of the lever as I use this all the time. I know the modern trannies are supposed to know when you are driving in a sporting manner, but I far prefer telling the transmission with the S button and not waiting for it to learn on it's own. I was with Saturn when they elimitated the manual selection of sport in '98 and I missed it dearly. Not that the '98 and newer trans wasn't any good, once it learned you could tell the difference big time and the overall feel of the trans was improved somewhat, but please Saab, retain the Sport setting manually!
Shifting with your fingers is very un-natural and easy to forget you're supposed to be doing. Also the shifting is not instantaneous as it is when you control the clutch and the gears, but somewhat delayed and protective of the trans.
