It depends on the dealer. According to statistics, the American dealer cannot depend on the service dept. alone. The average US auto dealer service dept. supplies less than 30% of the individual dealer's revenue (source: NADA). With so many independents out there now, dealers are starting to become warranty stops. Most oil changes are going to quickie stops, brakes go to Midas, etc. Dealer service deptartments are not the cash cows that they used to be. With the American customer's frame of mind, drive-thru oil changes and 10 minute brakes are making all of the money. Obviously, you and I both know that these places are death traps, and do more harm than good, but Average Joe doesn't know any better. In the end, he trades the car to a dealer, afterwards the dealer ends up repairing all of the problems caused by Bob's Drive-thru Oil, Brakes, and Taxidermy.
For a dealer to be profitable all cylinders must be firing, and all deptartments must have a positive figure on the bottom line. HOW that figure is acheived is based solely on the dealer's integrity. There are good dealers and bad dealers. I'm going to say it again, treat your good dealers well, and never repeat with the bad ones. Base this judgement on how you were treated, and how honest the experience was. In addition, one cannot judge a dealer on the sales person or service advisor alone. If a problem does arise, speak to a manager. If the manager gives you a satisfactory answer or apology, then obviously the problem lies in the employee (lowest man on the Todem Pole). If a customer is civil and/or diplomatic, they can get any problem solved. Take advantage of the manager, or throw a fit, on the other hand, and you'll probably be escorted out by security . :-) A manager can usually tell if you're just complaining because you want something for free (and believe me, it happens every day).
Cheers,
Brian.
