Dear Alice,
I hope this is not a sign that I scared people. Again, my aim was
to satisfy ourselves about correlation of plug gap with DI failure.
I believe that we're pretty well satisfied with the cause-effect
relationship now.
Also, DI failure will occur most often in hot summer months. So,
please don't worry, and this time of year was the best time to have
a discussion on DI so that our cars would be well prepped for Summer.
There are several different types of failures.
The most dangerous is catastrophic failure. This is what No. 9 and
others experienced. You cannot miss the symptoms of catastrophic failure
because your car loses all power and you basically have to find the
nearest shoulder. When you open up the hood, you'll smell burnt epoxy.
Then there are symptoms which come across as hesitation or misfiring.
There are numerous things (including turbo lag) which may be construed
as hesitation. So, please do not worry at the first sign of some
hesitation. The thing to do is to take your car to a competent mechanic.
He can download information from Tech II to tell you if there have been
misfirings.
Symtoms can be as minor as bad fuel mileage as described in a thread
below.
If you change spark plugs every 10K - 15K miles and make sure that
spark plug gap is below 1mm (.039"), you'll be fine. Ian Glenday does
this and he's not had DI problems in over 100,000 miles, and he lives
in the swamps of Southern Florida! He regularly "hangs" with the
Alligators down there :-)
Please don't worry. We've got this problem *licked*! :-)
thanks
Jae
