Caspar--have to disagree here. I have taken my wagon out of gear on the long downhill going South on the Merritt Parkway in Connecticut, after having driven all Highway from full tank in Augusta, Maine--and watched the mpg for that tankful rise on the SID over that mile are two. Even after 300 plus miles on the tank. The math for it is simple--look at the engine speed on the tach. It's 900 or so in neutral. If you are in gear, it does not matter how well engines work downhill, look at the tach-the throttle (or whatever passes for that on this engine) is open and the rpm is up.
BTW, for the sake of the main discussion, I got 34 mpg for the two long highway jaunts of Philaelphia to Bangor and Augusta back to Phila, with 5 people worth 630 pounds or so in the wagon, along with gear. With a lot of this in the 70s to make up for the accident and toll booth back-ups (even with E-Z Pass, Maine and NH are not on it). I can get to 24 in the city with the stick with careful driving in stop and go situations. The first two winters we had the car, we only managed around 30 on round trips to northern New Hampshire. Reason? Load Bars with ski holder attached, with two pair of x-courntry skis up. At highway speeds, rolling resistance is almost nil, and the big culprit is wind resistance, which goes up with speed. And aattachments.
