But if the engine is not getting any fuel, won't it turn off and have to be restarted? Are the spark plugs firing and not igniting anything? is nothing coming out of the tailpipe? The amount of fuel consumed is directly related to the rpm, and also affected by how wide open the throttle has been forced (hard accelerations are bad for mpg). This has not changed with fuel injection. If this were the case, why would there be idle consumption when you are stopped? It would be wonderful if when you take your foot off the pedal then there would be no gas consumption--but this is not how a gas powered engine currently can operate.
As for coasting out of gear, in idle, down a hill with no traffic around--first off, exactly how could that ever be proven by an observer, and second, I find it surprising that this comment aroused some immediate backlash yet the dominant view of this board has been that speed limit laws are nothing but money raisers having nothing to do with safety issues and are generally to be ignored as infringements of personal rights (see last month's overblown discussions of the speeding tiocket on the Taconic Parkway). Are you also going to say that whenever you stop your manual gearshift car you should stop it in gear and not take it out of gear until it is about to stall?
I thought the issue of this current thread was gas mileage figures, what are good numbers, and how to maximize them.
