9-5 was a huge quantum leap in terms of refinement, ride, and rigidity over the 9000. The 9-3 SS is a similar jump over the '99-02 9-3. The 9-3 SS shows quite a gain over the 9-5 in terms of rear suspension design, with way-less unsprung weight and better control over the geometry to create the best handling Saab ever and close to if not the best handling front drive car ever. With a new-design engine (I think GM brass gave approval to start making drawings in the mid-90s), brand new transmission (coming with the Arc/Vector), new structural concepts (double and triple walled pillars) Saab has moved the bar quite a bit higher in just 4 years. This from a company that pushed their original design from 1947 through 1985 or so, with an engine change in 1967 and a new model added in 1969! I imagine the current 9-5 has two or maybe 3 more model years - then it's the 9-3 SS turn to look jurassic...
