This is from April 2001 Car & Driver where they tested the Audi Allroad and the the Volvo XC. With regards to their AWD systems they could go just about any where on icy roads and up snow covered hills. But with all the electronic gadgetry and "special ice biting tires", if one wheel gets hung up make sure you have a tow strap(which supports case that snow tires and FWD can go really far).
They liked the Audi's overall fit and luxury over the Volvo's ultitarian approach. But liked the Volvo's ergonomics and thought the climate controls to be too low on the Audi.
The Volvo being down 53 horsepower managed 0-60 MPH in 8.5 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 16.4 @ 83 MPH with the Audi running 8.1 and 16.0 @ 86 MPH respectively. The Audi weighed in at a hefty 4200 lbs. and is expected to get 15/21 MPG city/highway where the Volvo gets 17/22 MPG and weighs just 3700 lbs. And you thought anything under 20 MPG was terrible for your 9-5 wagon. Just think what the owners will be filling up the BBs and service managers ears with when they see their fuel bill.
C&D like the Audi over the Volvo despite the $6000 difference in price($43,480 vs. $49,480). But they like the 3rd row rear seat in the Volvo for some reason as they make fun of it by stuffing full grown adults in it everytime it gets reviewed.
