All automatic transmissions these days have a locking torque converter. This allows the transmission to have a direct mechanical linkage and greatly improves efficiency. Usually they design the torque converter to lock as the car approaches cruising speed under light to moderate throttle.
When you decelerate in your Saab, watch the tach. When you lift your foot off the throttle, you will see the tach drop a bit - the torque converter has unlocked. As you coast to around 40 MPH, you will feel that "bump" and you will see the tach rise a bit as the torque converter locks and there is now a direct connection with the driving wheels. Again, I don't know why Saab does it this way.
