Before buying my SAAB I looked at extended warranty costs for the several kinds of cars I was considering as a crude means of assessing the probability of problems & the cost of repairing each kind of car (i.e., what's it likely to cost me?).
I found a huge variation in extended warranty prices for similar coverage, so shop around. There appeared to be a couple of different methods of pricing them. Some insurers (that's what a warranty is, an insurance policy) apparently used data for the specific make & model, although this approach was used by only 1 or 2 of them. Others seemed to group makes & models so that the premium for a SAAB 9-5 was exactly the same as for an S-60 and others, while Accords & Camrys were in another group that had a different group cost. I did all my research on the Internet and ultimately decided that I wasn't going to get the data I was seeking, but I did learn a little about extended warranties.
So the point of all this is to do what any smart consumer should do: Shop around.
