Mike Shaw in Denver has a lot of lease returns, which I'd bet can be had at an attractive price. I'd agree with a prior poster's advice about going with the 2000 if you are able. I drive a 99 9-5 which had a lot of things replaced, ECU, throttle body, SID, CV boots, DI, etc. Mike Shaw did all this work and did it well, bit to me it is still a pain to have stuff break and have to leave the car for days.
If you find a 99 you like, as someone suggested, make sure you review all the maintenance records. The ECU was a recall, but if the SID or throttle body have not been replaced, you could have exposure there.
As to the DI, you can review the BB postings to get the skinny on that. Mine failed and stranded family late at night in the mountains on 285. Out of warranty, but dealer (Shaw) fixed for free if I towed it in, so I ate an expensive tow bill. I'd recommend running the 91 octane fuel (particularily in warm months) in the car, owners manual gives a range down to 87, but car performs better and I believe runs cooler with 91. (I believe heat shortens the DI components, I think among those components are ICs). Do not put 85 octane in it, there is a SAAB technical bulletin attributing engine failures in the mountain states to people who trust the oil companies claims that 85 octane at mountain altitude = 87 octane at sea level.
Oh, did I forget to mention that is's a very well engineered car, outstanding combo of performance, comfort, safety, and efficiency. And a real pleasure to drive.
