dimmer connection for aftermarket stereo

I'm trying to find a suitable way to connect the dimmer lead for my aftermarket head unit. It wants to see a positive voltage to indicate that it should dim its display (not sure what its threshold is, but 12v would do it--somewhere in the middle might as well). Of course, the 9-5 is nowhere near that simple, combining input from the light sensor with the rheostat control to determine how (variably) bright to make the dashboard lights. Hence my dilemma.
I figured that maybe I could just use the voltage across the light bulbs in the SID, since they go from dim to bright as needed, but of course it couldn't be that easy. Instead of a varying voltage to ground across the bulb, it seems that there's always 12v on one end of the bulb and a varying voltage on the other--somewhere in the 6-8v range. So I guess there's some sort of transistor or other device in line with the bulb controlling its current.
The voltage drop across the bulb may still work for me (worst case I may need to use it to trigger a transistor to deliver a full 12v), but I was hoping to find a more definitive and simpler source for the dimmer. Anyone know of one? Surely someone else has tackled this?
