I ended up doing this, and it works like a champ. I pulled out the fusebox (disconnect the battery first!) and spliced a wire into the output side of fuse 5. That wire connects to the ignition sense lead on my head unit. Now if I want to activate the stereo without the car on I can turn the key to On and back off again, and I can turn the car off and have the stereo keep running. Removing the key turns it off. And hooking the wire in was one of the easiest things I've done--the fusebox pulls out the side with just three screws removed.
If you want to do this then make sure your ignition sense doesn't draw much current. This should be the case, since real power should be taken from the always-on (battery) lead, but stick a multi-meter in there and check the current just to be sure.
