Gold, platinum, silver, very little precious..... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Extended warranties are vital, but ..., phred, Mon, 9 Dec 2002 17:57:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Fancy metals are names of differing levels of extended warranty coverage. Lots of companies out there offer extended warranties. They're an unregulated insurance industry.
Basically there are two groups. Named component types where there is a detailed list of what's covered with different levels, gold, silver, platinum or whatever, and "bumper to bumper" types that list only a moderately short list of exclusions. But a "bumper to bumper" may be someones "platinum warranty". Get the bumper to bumper kind. There are too many parts to mention and it eliminates a lot of loopholes, but not all.
Then there's two types of terms. Vehicles still within the factory warranty get the factory warranty extended from the original in "service date" say from 4yrs-50,000miles to 6yrs-100,000miles, but all beginning when the car was new. After the factory warranty expires extended warranties are sold by the year and 12,000miles, 12-12, 24-24, 36-36 and so on. Generally you get more and better coverage when the car is still in factory warranty for you dollar.
Saab Certified is the least expensive extended warranty. It's zero deductible, bumper to bumper coverage from the factory, not brokered through anyone.
I have good experiences with the GM brand of factory warranties, General Motors Protection Plan, GMPP. Not the least expensive, but the least hassle and loopholes. You can probably get these at your local Saab dealer.
