Don't know if this suggestion will help but many people do not adjust outside mirrors to minimize blind spots (not just Saabs). You will often find if looking into the mirrors that you can see the side of the car. This is usually done because people need some sort of reference point to feel comfortable. If in fact you angle the mirrors outward much more, you will virtually eliminate the blind spot and minimize the need for the "over the shoulder" look. If you can sse a car approaching from behind in both inner and outer mirrors, you probably need to angle the outside mirrors outward so that they still capture the approaching vehicle until it is nearly even with your own. Once again, this is just a suggestion, but it seems to work quite well. Its really along the same lines as adding the aspheric mirror. (much cheaper)
