Although it was a short one, only 280 miles round-trip.
Went from Long Island, NY to Mohegan Sun Reservation/Casino up in Connecticut, took the folks there in my 9-5 Aero. (Went up there for some slot machine action. Dad & I broke even, mom won $2k!)
About the Aero--wow! I am constantly amazed by this car, even more so now.
I drove mostly around 75 mph, except for one slow stretch on I-95 in the Bronx, where one lane was closed; with 3 passengers in the car, crappy reformulated "oxygenated" winter gasoline in the tank (yields less mpg), and cold conditions (38'F) the car still managed to deliver *30* miles per gallon! (That's 36 miles per Imp. gallon for you .co.uk folks)
That's simply incredible for a car of this size, with 250 hp, wide 225 mm sports tires, and a realistic (not-too-tall) 5th gear... There is lots of reserve power in 5th gear: passing 18-wheelers without a downshift is effortless. I actually expect the fuel economy to get even *better* than this, because the car only has about 3,000 miles on her right now.
Mom's Y2K BMW 3-series (2.5-liter I6 w/step) only gets 26 mpg on the same trip. That's much worse fuel economy for a smaller car with significantly less power.
The SAAB seats are fantastic! Felt like I could drive across the United States in one sitting. My dad, who rode shotgun, slept the whole way back, "because the seats are so comfortable".
I tried the "night panel" function on a dark stretch of I-95--great idea. However, I was flipping through radio stations so I had to disable the night panel in order to see the radio display. I wound up dimming the dashboard lights with the rheostat instead, as I usually do, driving on dark roads late at night.
The radio has absolutely AMAZING reception. Even at exit 55 in Connecticut (about 65 miles from NYC), the SEEK function was still locking in on NYC FM broadcasts! Best reception of any car stereo I've ever tried.
What a car!
