MJP - the banjo bolt was a recall item on many 99 model year 9-5s; the service records for my car indicate that the recall was performed.

I'm not sure about the blue smoke, but I believe that the banjo bolt secures some of the plumbing for the turbo (cooling,oil?) and the bad bolt could cause turbo failure, resulting in blue smoke.

As I said, don't quote me on it, but I've heard this from several sources. Regardless, it is an issue if you vehicle was in the affected VIN range
