I just picked up a new GMC 1500 pick up truck for work on my orange ranch. This costs about 2/3 the price of my 2000 Aero & clearly has a much different mission, but I thought some insights were provided by comparing the two GM parts bin products:
•The turn indicator lever feels much more substantial & of better quality on the GMC. Saab clearly has access to better feeling components & should use them.
•I didn't realize how much I have come to rely upon the steering wheel radio controls; Saab has a very good system
•The GMC V8 has individual coils for each spark plug, as in the Saab. The connection is not direct like the Saab DIC but rather goes thru a short plug cable (3-4"). This must make the coil area cooler on the GMC & would be very important if the common theory of heat-dependent DIC failure is true.
• The GMC has info about compass direction, temp & passenger seat airbag readiness in the rearview mirror. This is a terrible distraction, info should be kept in the info display, like Saab. The automatic mirror doesn't brighten up in daylight as well as the Saab
•The truck as an "auto" headlight setting which I have quickly accepted (you can turn it to manual). This keeps low intensity DRLs on during the day & switches to regular headlights as the sunlight dims. It works as well as hoped.
• The remote unlock mechanism works from 50-75 feet and turns on the DRLs and the backup lights, making it easy to walk to or from the vehicle in pitch darkness. I don't buy into Saab's contention that mini activation distance is a "feature"

• For what it's worth.
