I found that 38/36 or 36/36 works the best. Gislaveds do not handle well on dry pavement when they are new. Since they are a real serious snow tire, they actually handle pretty well in the dry when it's below freezing. That's typically when summer tires and most all seasons get hard and don't stick to the road anymore.
As they wear, they will get progressively better in the dry and worse in the snow. Common sense I guess. Right now, I'm on my 3rd season with the Gislaveds and they're pretty worn. They handle surprisingly well in the snow considering the wear. I'm STILL deliberating getting a new set or waiting. At this point, in the snow they handle about as well as a brand new set of Michelin Artic Alpins which is acceptable.
I get to do non-scientific A-B comparions of the new/old as my wife's 9-5 Aero has a brand new set of Gislaveds on the 16" 7 spoke BBS alloys.
