But in the specific case of the Saab I4, has it not been around since before emmissons requirements with the much the same combustion chamber design regarding basic shape ? Back then, an engine ran and produced best power on an ideal fuel/air ratio, and could tolerate a high degree of ignition advance without pinging, due to both the air/fuel ratio and all that lead.
Now fast forward to todays engines, which run at a leaner than ideal (stoichoimetric) fuel/air ratio. You can't run the same timing advance, because of the lean mixture, which tends to burn slower and hotter. So a higher octane can counteract this, but a lower octane than what is recommended may mean the engine fires at a point which produces less power, and therefore in the long run less fuel economy. Why would the manufacture recommend an octane rating less than that which allows the engine to produce max. output under the most frequent operating loads, given the fact that the engine is controlled by a sophisticated management sytems which on the whole operates to pre-empt conditions which generate knock.
