Dave,
The responses are point on, show me a manufacturer and I will show you a website that is rife with issues being shared. If you are taking an Aero out for test drives then know I went through a long and methodical purchase process along with several of my coworkers and friends. We each had our bias(es) and tried to drag the others into their camp i.e., the Audi lover could see nothing but the Audi family of products as thee one to select from. Well, we each bought a car (2 Audis, 1 Dodge Ram Cummings Diesel or something or other workhorse to take his can of garbage to the dump ever other week, one Mercedes 430 black as a moonless night, one 745i silver BMW, and one is waiting on the Cayanne and will take delivery in about 2 months and I can't wait as he is getting to be a bit much: Seems Porsche has a site that plays various sound bites i.e., exceleration!)
Boy am I glad I bought the Aero, 2002 in March. The Audi's were bought about the same time, within weeks. One Audi lives in the dealers lot, seems the current issue is the turbo and being new the parts needed have to be ordered in. He has been driving a Mercury 4 seater suicide rental that the Audi dealer is paying for. Seems they take care of you but long term leases, more than a day or two, get less than desired rides. The other Audi owner recently spent over $2k on repairs not covered by the warrantee. Granted he was the cause of most if not all of his issues but steep repairs. He just got his car back after several weeks in the shop and he is once again a great Audi fan.
The Mercedes guy traded in his older 420 for the 430 and took a drastic change of life step, he sold his 1989 930 Turbo with a whopping 27K miles on it. I was temped but he steered me clear. He spent a ton on upkeep but I think he had to becuase he didn't drive the car. He likes the 430 for everything but snow / slippery conditions and has had to strand this winter. Again this may be his fault has I do not think he bought a set of snow wheels and tires.
To summarize, do your homework and buy what you like. Once purchased do the maintenance i.e., Full Synthetic 0-40 oil changing at 5k intervals, get good tires and balance them, and keep your glass clean.
Note: I found the web sites to be good resources to bounce my specific questions off of before and now after the purchase. Sharing your need as specifically as you can affords those that frequent this site the opportunity to help you versus this long winded "I am trying" to help but unsure if I am. Best of luck in your car shopping adventure.
