J. I think it's because of the drag caused by the torque converter. If you put the auto in neutral, a condition similar to a manual in neutral or with clutch depressed, the idle is fine, so I can only conclude that the transmission adds load that causes the roughness. The condition is at it's worst when the engine/transmission are cold, so I suspect the viscosity of the transmission fluid is a contributing factor. Also, turning off the A/C helps because the load is reduced.
At any rate, Saab did improve idle over the 9000. I had one for 6 years and it shuddered worse on idle! Engine mounting technology probably improvrd :>)
