I had the speakers professionally installed as I also had an Infinity BassLink active subwoofer installed at the same time.
So to answer your question, I dont know how the tech removed the ring, but its not there now on my install. I guess you should use a pocket knife or something to prize the ring away from the metal.
I prised the grille up, post install and the speaker fits snugly in the existing cut out, I agree that clearance is next to non-existant, but they do not vibrate against the grille. By using the Basslink to deliver the low frequencies, I am able to turn the bass control to "mid" at the notch, and therefore the front door speakers are not trying too hard to deliver bass, and the sound stage of the dask speakers greatly enhances the overall sound.
All in all I am delighted with the upgrades.
I can turn up the volume all the way to the top, and there is no distortion or vibration or trim rattling that I can hear anyway.
