I think the way it's applied has more to do with your results. Many car detailers use water-based fluids, but apply them poorly & end up messing things up more than if they used plain water. I've never had any problems with Armor All. I use only the "low gloss" flavor & then only on the opaque plastic parts. Never spray it on the part you're coating (only apply it to a cloth & then use the cloth to apply the liquid) & never use it on a contact point (seat, pedal, steering wheel, shifter). Used correctly, it lasts longer & protects better (because it lasts longer?) than a lot of other more expensive liquids.
All the wood in our 9-3's got a nice, gloss finish to it, so I only use a mild window cleaning solution on both it & any clear plastics. Be sure to lightly brush away (or vacuum) any dust before you start wiping, & always use a clean cloth, as this fine dust & dirt will scratch these glossy surfaces. If your steering wheel & shiter are not leather, you can use this same stuff to clean them.
For leather, I only use a good leather cleaner/conditioner. I got mine from a leather store. Use it at least once a year. Be careful of some of the stuff that's labelled as "leather preservative," as many of them are designed to add lubrication back into distressed, dried-out hides (like boots, saddles, gloves, etc.) & tend to be heavy on the oils, greases, fats & waxes. While good for baseball gloves, bike seats or snow boots, they can damage your car's leather by causing it to stretch way too much.
