Have no idea why Mobil wouldn't recommend their synthetic, but I guess they know more about their stuff than I do.
I'd use AMSOIL synthetic. When you pull the bottom plug, you get about 1/3 the total fluid. I will normally drain what I can, replace the same amount, and then run long enough to mix. Repeat the process two or three more times, and you'll have a high percentage of synthetic in there.
Long term, repeat the process (single drain and refill with AMSOIL ATF) about every 45,000 miles.
