I travel a bit on business and have used On-Star a number of times. I've found that it depends upon the operator that you get. If things aren't going well simply thank them, hang up, and call back.
I have had several very good experiences with On-Star and only one really bad one. In on case, I was looking for a snow sled to take my 2 year old son sledding. After visiting two or three stores, each requiring the child seat in-and-out, walking to, and through the store, carrying my son all the way I sat in the car to think things through. There staring me in the face was the On-Start button. I called, explained my situation and the operator very cherrily phoned all surounding stores (with some assistance from me) and on the third try found a store that carried what I was looking for and had them in stock. Definitely saved me 45 mins, or more.
Bottom line, service depends upon the provider. I'd love to keep the On-Start service after it expires at the end of the year, but frankly I just can't see taking on the expense for the limited times I use it and given that as it becomes more popular the service will certainly get worse.
Cheers,
Dave
