The braking force on any car you are likely to drive will always far exceed the accelerating force. On a SAAB 9-5 the deceleration provided by the brakes is approximately 11 m/s^2, while the max acceleration is approx 3.5 m/s^2 (on level ground). So on the flat you can stop you car easily under full acceleration. If you are going down hill, gravity assists the engine ( g sin theta), but still for a 1:8 hill you should have no trouble stopping. If the hill is really steep, then the car will slide down if the friction force is exceeded, but this had absolutely nothing to do with the engine torque.
Try it, put your foot on the brake and then floor the autobox - you may trash the box but the car will say stationary. (Even works in Audis!)
